Continuous linear runs tuned warm at low dim, with drivers grouped in an accessible chase so the next service call does not involve a ladder and a drywall patch.
Scope
Design-assist with the builder and the interior designer on a great room with a stepped ceiling, a stone fireplace wall, and a west-facing glass wall that swings the room from bright to dark in twenty minutes at sunset.
Site conditions
Cove detail was framed before the lighting was selected, which left a shallow return in two of the three steps. Fireplace stone was going up before trim, so the grazing run had to be located and roughed early or not at all.
What we installed
Continuous warm-dim linear runs in the cove, a low-output grazing run at the stone, recessed downlights on a separate zone for cleaning and task light, and controls grouped into four scenes the homeowner can actually name. Drivers live together in a chase behind an access panel in the mechanical room.
What we watched for
Mismatched dimming curves are what make an expensive lighting package feel cheap. We mocked up the cove section on site with the actual driver and dimmer before ordering the full run, and we specified the same family across all zones so nothing flickers at ten percent.
How it holds up
The room reads right at dusk without anyone hunting for a switch, and when a driver eventually fails it is a ten-minute swap in the mechanical room rather than a ceiling repair.
