Electrical panel upgrades in Boise & the Treasure Valley
The panel is the part of the house every other electrical decision depends on. This guide explains when an upgrade is warranted, what the day looks like, and what it costs to start.
When an upgrade is actually warranted
A 100A or smaller service, a full bus with no room for new circuits, doubled-up breakers, a known-problem panel brand, scorching or corrosion inside the enclosure, or a load calculation that already exceeds the service. Adding EV charging, a heat pump, or an induction range often tips a borderline panel over.
The load calculation settles it
We measure what the house actually draws and add the loads you are planning. That number, not a rule of thumb, decides between 200A and 400A and whether a subpanel makes more sense than a full service change.
What the day looks like
Utility disconnect first thing in the morning, meter main and panel change-out during the day, every branch circuit re-terminated and labeled, new grounding electrodes driven where required, inspection in the afternoon, reconnect before evening. Plan on power off for most of one working day.
Permits and inspection
Service work is permitted and inspected by the Idaho Division of Building Safety or the local jurisdiction, and only a licensed contractor can pull it. We handle the permit, meet the inspector, and give you the closed permit.
What a bigger service unlocks
EV charging without load-shedding gymnastics, a standby generator with a proper transfer switch, shop circuits that do not dim the kitchen, and headroom for whatever the house needs next.
